West Rowan Volunteer Fire Department is a Class 5 department that serves and protects the western most portion of Rowan County, North Carolina. Our district covers approximately 49 square miles of rural homes and farmland. With approximately 3,000 citizens living within our district.

This department is the result of a merger of Centenary VFD and Mount Ulla - Bear Poplar VFD. The merger process began in 1999 and the Articles of Merger were filed with the State in 2001, which officially changed our name to West Rowan Volunteer Fire Department, Inc.

In 2022 we now have paid staff during daytime hours.  These are part-time employees to cover our district during the peak daytime hours when our volunteers are normally unavailable.

We are celebrating our 70th anniversary in 2023. Mt Ulla - Bear Popular Vol Fire Dept began its operations in 1953. Centenary Vol Fire Dept started in 1956.
